Abstract: This chapter examines the landscape of current theories of self-defense by tracing its roots in criminal law. It looks first into the three doctrinal foundations of self-defense: self-defense as an exception, self-defense as a right, and self-defense as a duty. Also, it considers the four models of self-defense that shape the way of interpreting substantive law: self-defense as punishment, self-defense as an excuse, self-defense as the justified defense of autonomy, and self-defense of society.
