Title: Clinical Observation on Fourteen Patients of Upper Limb Venous Malformations by Sclerotherapy with Anhydrous Ethanol Injection
Abstract: Objective To observe the clinical effect and safety of sclerotherapy of upper limb venous malformations using anhydrous ethanol. Methods Between May 2007 and October 2011, anhydrous ethanol was injected percutaneously to the lesions of 14 patients of whole upper limb venous malformations under brachial plexus anesthesia. Every patient was injected anhydrous ethanol for 8 to 10 times with the interval of 30 to 40 days and the treatment time of 10 to 12 months. Results Thirteen patients was completely cured and 1 with good response. The adverse reactions included the skin blisters in 5 cases, skin focal necrosis in 1 case, and forearm skin disorders of shallow sensation in 1 case. Transaminase increased in all cases, system fever was in 9 cases, and white blood cells increased in 11 cases. All the complications healed without any treatment. No serious complications such as motor dysfunction and internal damage occurred. Conclusion Sclerotherapy using anhydrous ethanol injection is an efficient and safe method for upper limb venous malformations.
