Title: Body Mass Index, but not Waist/Height Ratio,Closely Related to Adolescents Hyuertension
Abstract: Objective To delineate the relationship between body mass index(BMI),waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)and hypertension in adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 3874 adolescents ages 13-18 years. They were classified into four groups according to BMI and WHtR,group A:normal BMI and WHtR 0.46(n=3024},group B:normal BMI and WHtR≥0.46(n=103),group C:BMI reached the criteria of overweight and obesity with WHtR0.46(n=189),group D:BMI reached criteria of overweight and obesity with WHtR≥0.46(n=558).Results 1)SBP and DBP in adolescents in group D were obviously higher than the other three groups(P0.01).SBP and DBP in group C were also higher than that in group A and B(P0.01).No difference in SBP and DBP was found between group A and B.2)After the adjustment for gender and age, logistic analysis showed the risks for high SBP alone of group C and D was 2.87(95% CI 1.49-5.55)and 7.58 flods(95% CI 5.32-10.81)(All P0.01)greates than group A,5.39 flods greater for DBP elevation in group D compared with group A(95 % CI:3.62-8.01,P0.01),The risks of all phenotypes of hypertension(including elevation of SBP alone,DBP alone, both SBP and DBP elevation)for group C and D was 2.37(95% CI 1.35-4.17,P0.01) and 6.24 flods(95 % CI 4.64-8.39,P0.01)more prevalence than that in group A.3)Multivariables analysis showed only BMI was the independent risk factors for SBP and DBP whereas WHIR had not been taken into account. Conclusion Overweight and obesity were the significant factors leading to adolescents hypertension.BMI,but not waist/height ratio, was the independent predisposed factor for adolescents hypertension.
