Title: Analysis and investigation of health status among 1661 elderly people in a rural area
Abstract: Objective To investigate the health status of 1 661 elders in a rural area and study the application of correlative evaluating index. Methods 1 661 elderly people were randomly recruited and the levels of body height, body weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose and hemoglobin were measured. Results Among the 1 661 elderly people, the prevalence rate of hypertension, hyperglycemia and anemia was 63.4%, 23.8% and 35.3% respectively. The levels of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) of women were higher than that of men (P0.05), while waist to hip ratio (WHR)was adverse (P0.05). The levels of BMI and WC were higher (BMI25 kg/m2, and WC85 cm) before 65 years old and descended after 65 (P0.05). BMI, WC, WHR and WHtR all had positive correlations with systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and blood glucose, while WHtR had the highest correlation (P0.01). Conclusions The prevalence rates of hypertension, hyperglycemia and anemia are relatively high. More women than men have a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity, and they are easier to get hyperglycemia. People between 45 and 65 are also easier to get overweighted. WHtR is an effective abdomen type obesity index and an effective index to predict hypertension and hyperglycemia.
