Title: Synthesis of 2,3-Epoxyproqanol from Glycerol
Abstract: 2,3-Epoxyproqanol(glycidol) was synthesized from glycerol by two steps. In the first step, glycerol and gaseous hydrogen chloride was catalyzed by carboxylic acid to form 3-chloro-1,2 –propanediol. In the second step,3-chloro-1,2 –propanediol was removed hydrogen chloride to form 2,3-epoxyproqanol by the use of alcoholic sodium hydroxide. The results showed that acetic acid was the optimal catalyst in the first reaction and the optimum amount was 0.2 times as much glycerol. For the second reaction, the optimum molar ratio of reactants was 1:1 and the optimum reaction time was 30 minutes.
