Title: Apparent Diffusion Coefficients in the Evaluation of the Cerebral Astrocytomas
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the usefulness of ADC in differentiating various tumor tissues of cerebral astrocytomas and its relationship with cellularity and grading of astrocytomas.Materials and Methods Using a Siemens 1.5 T Super conduct MR unit, 48 patients of astrocytoma (gradeⅠ~Ⅱand grade Ⅲ~Ⅳ, 23 and 25 respectively) were examined with Conventional MRI and DWI, ADC values were calculated both in the different tumor tissues and in the normal brain tissues, specimens were stained with HE. Cellularity of astrocytoma was analyzed with Image J 1.33 software postoperatively. Results Significant differences of ADC values were found in different tumor tissues of astrocytomas compared with normal brain tissue (P0.001). There was not statistical difference of ADC value between in non-enhancing solid tumor and peritumoral edema (P0.05). Negative correlation was existed between ADC values in enhancing solid tumor and grading of astrocytomas (r_s=-0.641, P0.001); negative correlation was also existed between ADC values in enhancing solid tumor and tumor cellularity (r=-0.643, P0.001).Conclusion The ADC values can be used to differentiate tumor tissues and evaluate the tumor cellularity and grading of astrocytomas.
