Abstract: At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,there appeared in the American literary world a new literary trend of thought,with its new subjects,new themes and new style,it was a clear diversion from the former literary trend.It was called by later generations the literary movement of naturalism.Young as he was,the American writer Stephen Crane who was noted for keen observation,fanciful imagination,and exceptional talent made great contributions to the rise of naturalism in his unique way.However,for a long time,Stephen Crane was confusingly called an impressionist,a realist,as well as a naturalist.However,a lot of evidences point to one fact that Stephen Crane was undoubtedly one of the forerunners of American naturalism.
