Title: Hepatocellular carcinoma in nude mice: SPIO enhanced MR imaging
Abstract: Objective To assess the ability of SPIO on MR imaging for the nude mice model grafted with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods Firstly, we made Fe3O4 nanoparticles with chemistry coprecipitation, and coated them with human serum albumin to produce a new-type negative contrast medium called SPIO for MRI on liver. Eighteen nude mice models grafted with HCC, underwent T1 and T2 weighted MR imaging before and after the injection of Gd-DTPA and SPIO agent in order to compare the number of lesions detected by MR with pathology examination. Results In the group that the diameters of liver tumors were inferior 3 mm, the detection rate on SPIO enhanced MR imaging was superior to on Gd-DTPA enhanced MR imaging (92.3% vs 23.1%,χ2=3.98, P0.05). Conclusion SPIO detecting ability was superior to Gd-DTPA and approached that of gross pathology on T2 weighted imaging.
