Title: Efficacy of cefuroxime in prevention of infections in orthopedics department
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To study the efficacy of cefuroxime in the prevention of infections in orthopedics department so as to provide basis for the prevention of orthopedic infections.METHODS A total of 192 patients undergoing orthopedic surgery from Jan 2010 to Dec 2011 were chosen as the study objects. They were randomly divided into two groups, the observation group of 96 patients was taken with preoperative administration of 1.25g of cefuroxime, and continued the medication for 1-2 days after the surgery. The control group of 96 patients was given with 2g of ampicillin, the patients continued to use for 1-2 days after the surgery. The incidence of infections, wound healing, and the average wound healing time of the two groups of patients were observed.RESULTS There were totally 2 cases with nosocomial infections in the observation group,1 case of osteomyelitis and 1 case of cellulite, the infection rate was 2.08%.There were 11 cases of infections in the control group,3 cases of incisional infections,2 cases of open fracture with postoperative infection,2 cases of osteomyelitis, and 4 cases of cellulites, the infection rate was 11.46%,the infection rate of the control group was significantly higher than that of the observation group, the difference was statistically significant(P0.05).The mean wound healing time was(12.5±3.5) days in the observation group,(16.5±5.5) days in the control group. There were 72 cases of excellent incision healing and 22 cases of good incision healing with the good rate of 97.92% in the observation group, and there were 63 cases of excellent incision healing and 17 cases of good incision healing with the good rate of 83.33% in the control group, the difference was statistically significant(P0.05).CONCLUSION Cefuroxime has a remarkable effect on the prevention of infections in orthopedics department, significantly reducing the incidence of infection, shortening the wound healing time as well as improving the quality of healing.
