Title: Effect of sandblasting on the bond strength of luting cements to zirconia
Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of sandblasting on the bond strength of different luting cements to zirconia and to find the optimal luting cement. Methods In this study,140 big discs of zirconia and 140 small discs of zirconia were randomly divided into 14 groups, each group including 10 big and 10 small discs.Seven commonly-used cements were chosen(zinc phosphate cement, zinc polyacrylate cement,Ketac Cem Easymix,Rely X luting,Bifix QM,Super-Bond CB and Panavia F).Seven groups of specimens were sandlasted and the other seven groups were not treated.Bond area and bond thickness could be confined by low-viscous polyethylene tape with an inner diameter of 3.0 mm and thickness of 50 μm.Big discs and small discs were bonded together by different cements. All cemented specimens were stored in 37℃ distilled water for 24 hours and tested under shear loading until fracture on the universal testing machine. Results The difference in bond strength was significant between the non-treatment groups and sandlasting groups(P0.01).Bond strength of Panavia F and Super-Bond CB to ZrO2 was higher than that of the others(P0.01).Conclusion Surface sandlasting treatment could improve the shear bond strength of cements to ZrO2.Panavia F and Super-Bond CB are recommended.
