Title: MRI characteristics of articular cartilage and the infuencing factors
Abstract: Objective To probe into MRI characteristics of articular cartilage and various influencing factors. Methods Twelve specimens of fresh human knee were examined by MRI with various orientation and sequences. The specimen was sliced, decalcified, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and examined with polarized light microscopy. Results The thickness, laminar appearance and signal intensity of articular cartilage on MRI were correlated with orientation of the collagen structure, water content, age of patient, partial volume effect, chemical shift, anisotropy and imaging sequences. Conclusions In order to evaluate articular cartilage with MRI, attention must be given to age of patient and the various technical parameters.
