Title: A Theoretical Reflection on the Interaction of Cricket and Baseball in American Sporting History
Abstract: For many years, historians of sport have debated why baseball predominated over cricket in the United States, once the colony of British Empire. The rapidly decline of cricket in the United States is probably one of the most confusing problems both for baseball and cricket research.Even today, there are still many problems behind the relationship between baseball and cricket.Records indicate that the development of cricket in America not only can trace its earlier origin back to 17th century and remained popular in the United States until the 1860s.Paradoxically,immediately after the Civil War,when American society entered into the Gilded Age,cricket had gradually declined into the margins of American sporting life.By critical examining the history of baseball and cricket in the United States, this article makes an effort to review the predominated theories and demonstrate why and how baseball not cricket became the National Pastime in American society. Our intention is also to provide a further understanding of theoretical dilemma in the research field of baseball history and sociology.
