Title: Relationship between serum homocysteine and diabetic nephropathy in elderly patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes mellitus
Abstract: Objective To explore the significance of serum homocysteine(Hcy)in early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy in elderly patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes mellitus. Methods 107elderly patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes mellitus were divided into the normal albuminuria group(43cases),the microalbuminuria group(36cases)and the clinical proteinuria group(28cases)according to urinary albumin excretion rate(UAER).And 30cases of healthy elderly people were selected as the control group.Meanwhile, the creatinine, blood lipids, glycosylated hemoglobin and Hcy of all groups were detected. Results The serum Hcy levels of elderly patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes mellitus were significantly higher than those of the control group(P 0.05or0.01).Hcy levels increased with the raise of UAER(P 0.01).Conclusion Serum Hcy levels in elderly patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes mellitus can be important reference index for early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy.
