Title: Scanning electron microscope study of the effect of bleaching agents on the morphology of human enamel and dentin
Abstract: Objective To observe the ultrastructure changes of the morphology of enamel and dentin after treated with different concentration of bleaching agents. Methods The fresh extracted teeth were treated with 30% hydrogenperoxide ①,16% carbamide peroxide ②,and 11% carbamide peroxide ③ respectively for six days. The morphology of enamel and dentin of each tooth was evaluated under a scanning electron microscope. Results In group ①,some enamel crystals had obvious demineralization.Collagenfiber was exposured due to dentin dmineralization. In group ②,part of the texture of enamel crystals was not distinct due to demineralization.Foci of decalcification of dentin were found in SEM.In group ③,enamel rods were regularly arranged and highly mineralized and dentin had scattered foci of decalcification. Conclusion The high concentration of bleaching agents demineralizes enamel and dentin, and some texture was destroyed. The lower concentration of bleaching agents is a safe and effective agent for clinical application.
