Title: Evaluation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) Features and Invasion Routes of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma(NPC) Infilatrating the Carvernous Sinus
Abstract: Objective:To investigate the MRI magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) features and invasion routes of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) infilatrating the carvernous sinus.Methods:The MR images and clinical materials of 140 patients with pathologically proven involvement of carvernous sinus by NPC were reviewed.The images were assessed for MRI characteristics and invasion routes of carvernous sinus involvement.Results:MR images showed infiltration of 156 cavernous sinus of the 140 patients.One hundered and seven cavernous sinus were encroached by only one routes,and 39 cavernous sinus were encroached by two routes,and 10 cavernous sinus were encroached by more than two routes.Of this 156 infiltated cavernous sinus,51(32.69%) sides were encroached by foramen ovale solitarily,and 42(26.92%) sides were encroached by lacerum only,and 26(16.67%) sides were encroached by both foramen ovale and foramen lacerum.Conclusion:MRI can show the invasion routes of NPC infilatrating the cavernous sinus clearly.The most common single route is through the foramen ovale,and then the foramen lacerum.The most common comitant route is foramen ovale and foramen lacerum.The invasion through the pterygopalatine fossa and foramen rotundum can also be observed frequently.
