Abstract: The concept of dynamic capabilities is a significant contribution to strategic management theory, yet little relatively empirical research has been conducted on how dynamic capabilities required for endogenous firm growth through investment in productive capital assets. This paper empirically examines in real time the dynamic capabilities required by the firm for investment in capital assets. We seek to answer the questions of which capabilities are required by firms for managing their investment projects, and how they are developed. Using a rich single case study, this paper contributes theoretically to the dynamic capabilities literature by analyzing the experience of an oil firm as it makes transformative capital investments which extend its productive resources thereby allowing it to seize new market opportunities offered by a regulatory change.
