Abstract: A status report of the environment of Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries assesses environmental changes during the 1970s to see if new policies have had any effect. The report covers some successes and broad trends, while noting some continuing problems. There is evidence that the economic impact of environmental policies has ranged from moderate to positive and that there is an improved ratio of resource consumption to output. Some problems have worsened, often from lack of priority. Many gaps in the available environmental data are of concern because it is difficult to use these data to make international comparisons or policy analyses. The OECD recommends periodic national and regional reports on the state of the environment to improve the data. (DCK)
