Title: EFFECT OF DURATION OF MILKING ON BOVINE MILK YIELD AND COMPOSITION, MILKING CHARACTERISTICS AND MASTITIS
Abstract: Three groups of 20 cows were allocated to 3 milking treatments for the total duration of a lactation Cows in Treatments 1 and 2 were milked for 4.5 and 6.5 min, respectively, at both am and pm milkings irrespective of milk yield, while clusters were removed from cows in Treatment 3 (control) when milk flow-rate dropped to 0.182 kg/min. Treatments did not affect milk yield, milk composition, milking characteristics or the incidence of new infection and clinical mastitis. New infections were not related to teat orifice damage, the duration of overmilking, milk flow-rate at cluster removal in cows for which the fixed times led to incomplete milking, or to mean milking rate.
