Abstract: In this paper multiculturalism is considered in relation to education and public library services. Following a brief review of the historical relationship between libraries and minorities, the current debate concerning multiculturalism in education is discussed. Issues relevant to education and librarianship are identified. The position presented is that libraries have a responsibility to provide services and materials appropriate to the communities they serve, but must remain neutral in response to social issues. The implications of various multicultural approaches to library service are examined.
