It began as The City Plan, 1915-1918; then again as City Planning, 1925-1934; the Planners' Journal, 1935-1943; and then as the Journal of the American Institute of Planners, 1944-1978. This paper traces its story, through wars, depression, professional development, intellectual change and growth, charting the impact on it of the times, the field, and the editors. The dynamics of its content, style, and usefulness are reviewed and interpreted, to better understand why the Journal is so important to the profession today and how it has come to be so.Read More
