Title: Suppression of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability by electron plasma waves
Abstract: A transverse Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a Q-machine plasma is observed to be suppressed by externally excited electron plasma waves propagating along the magnetic field. Appreciable stabilization is verified in a wide frequency range, determined by the plasma density, when large-amplitude electron plasma waves propagate in a bounded plasma. A simple analysis of the stabilization is given for the case in which the parallel wavelength of the unstable oscillation is much larger than that of the electron plasma waves. The stabilizing effect is due to the disturbance of the electron motion (parallel to the magnetic field) by the periodic field of the electron plasma waves.
