Title: Anion exchange behaviour of uranium and thorium in mixed solvent systems
Abstract: The adsorption of uranium (VI) and thorium on Dowex 1-X8 resin from alcoholic hydrochloric and nitric acid solutions was measured. In each case, the acidity of the solutions was sufficiently low that the sorption mechanism could be considered as a distribution of the neutral complex between two phases. Correspondingly, the relationships of log D vs. mole fraction alcohol were examined and were found to be linear in all cases. This indicates that the major factor that affects the distribution is the change in the free energy of solvation of the neutral complex with change in alcohol content.
