Title: Salt- and Flooding Tolerance of Puccinellia peisonis IV. Root Respiration and the Role of Aerenchyma in Providing Atmospheric Oxygen to the Roots
Abstract: Respiration rates of roots of Puccinellia plants which were grown at different salinities and with varying oxygen levels in the growth medium were measured. Roots grown in O2 deficient medium showed an increased respiration rate when 100 mmol · 1−1 NaCl was added to the growth medium, whereas KCl did not stimulate respiration. Root respiration of plants grown in O2 deficient media is supported by atmospheric O2 from the aerenchyma. O2 enters the aerenchyma mainly in the proximal region of the root. Diffusion of O2 from the shoot is only of minor importance.
