Title: Coramae Richey Mann on Women, Crime and the Color of American Justice
Abstract: Abstract The contributions of African-American criminologists have yet to be given sufficient prominence and recognition in the shaping of the academic discourse on crime and justice in America. Persistent failures in the area of policy-making underscore the need for more diversity and inclusiveness in ongoing efforts to understand the problems that plague the administration of justice. The perspectives of African-American criminologists should be treated as a visible and valuable resource. Toward this end, the contributions of African-American criminologist Coramae Richey Mann are explored within the larger framework of her life and work in the struggle for social justice. The significance of Mann's unique “minority perspective” is discussed. Biographical data were gathered from her published works and verified by a telephone interview. A detailed analysis of her major publications is conducted under two themes: the etiology of female crime and the color of American justice.
