Title: Study on the anion exchange behaviour and separation of protactinium, zirconium and niobium in HAc-HNO3-HF mixtures
Abstract: Adsorption characteristics of Pa, Zr and Nb on the anion exchanger Dowex 1 × 8 are studied in a mixed system of HAcHNO3HF. The adsorption of these elements is continuously enhanced by increasing the concentration of acetic acid and the distribution coefficients are higher in the mixed system than in HNO3 or HNO3HF without HAc. Under conditions where all three elements give stable solutions, the adsorption rate appears the highest for Pa, intermediate for Zr and lowest for Nb. These data provide the basis for an effective separation, with one column operation it is also possible to separate Pa from its daughter products as well as Zr and Nb, present as impurities.
