Title: PREGARE CON LA BOCCA, CON GLI OCCHI E COL CUORE NELL'ITALIA DELLA PRIMA ETÀ MODERNA
Abstract: Tra la fine del Medioevo e gli inizi dell'età moderna la pratica della preghiera viene gestita in molte forme diverse, attraverso parole spontanee o formule recitate a mente, leggendo testi scritti, compiendo gesti, o con pensieri che alimentano sentimenti ed emozioni. La dualità più fortemente sentita non è tuttavia quella tra oralità e scrittura, ma piuttosto tra la preghiera orale e quella mentale; gli esempi del Pater noster di derivazione evangelica e della preghiera del nome di Gesù, originata dalla pratica dei padri del deserto, ne mostrano le forme possibili. Il problema principale, che emerge soprattutto dopo la Riforma, è quello della comprensione di testi letti o recitati in lingua latina, e di una possibile percezione puramente magica della preghiera. In ambito cattolico l'affermarsi della pratica del rosario nella sua versione meccanica sembra segnare la prevalenza della preghiera orale su quella mentale.
