Abstract: This chapter presents the ideas and issues regarding gender and ethnicity patterns to challenge practitioners, researchers, and academicians to further consider the impact of older persons' gender and ethnicity on their mental health and well-being. An emerging pattern among ethnic minority populations has shown that the mental impairments associated with aging are amplified by problems related to ethnicity and gender. The effects of poor socioeconomic status produce an increased susceptibility to mental disorders in an already vulnerable group of people. To assist research in aging and efforts toward program development, studies must incorporate greater specification of age, sex, and ethnic cohorts as they relate to the mental health status of the elderly. Approaches to community mental health highlight the importance of cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural training of mental health professionals, attempts to eliminate the barriers to greater utilization of the mental health care system by ethnic minority elderly, and developing institutional arrangements to enhance services to elderly minority females.
