Title: MUSICAL REFERENCE: A SOURCE OF MEANING IN THE FIRST MOVEMENT OF THE "EROICA"
Abstract: Musical coherence can be attributed to similarity or developmental relations between the events of a piece. Similar harmonic patterns, motivic development, or similar orchestrations are the sorts of things that bring about musical continuity. The first movement of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony has an additional source of coherence: referential relations. To elucidate this notion of musical reference, I shall consider bars 95-97, which occur in the second theme group (see Example 1) . ^ These are intriguing measures for several reasons: ambiguous harmonic implications, melodic and textural differentiation from the immediately preceding measures, and reference to prior music. In the following discussion, we shall see how the harmonic, melodic, and textural factors effect the referential function of these three measures.
