Title: THE EFFECT OF CANADA'S NEW DANGEROUS GOODS LEGISLATION ON THE FOR HIRE TRUCKING INDUSTRY
Abstract: Canada has recently released the long anticipated regulations made pursuant to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act. The purpose of this paper is to review the impact of this legislation on a large for hire highway common carrier. This paper also looks back at the concerns expressed in the 1984 RTAC/CITE Urban Goods Movement Workshop. At that time, representatives of all three levels of government, plus shipper and carrier representatives attempted to formulate guidelines for routing hazardous commodities by truck within Canadian urban areas. To understand the impact of the new legislation, it will be necessary to provide some insight as to what preceded the legislation and how this has changed after the new legislation was enacted.
