Abstract: Abstract The philosophy of technology has a substantive role in constructing ethical universals during an era of globalization. It makes two major contributions to a new generation of media ethics: a critique of the prevailing view of technology as neutral and a human-centered theory of technology. Three applications are pertinent: (1) it prevents us from universals in the Enlightenment tradition; (2) it advocates including alternative technologies in universal theory; and (3) it demonstrates the need for transforming values through education. As adopted here, most scholars see Heidegger's phenomenology and Taoist thought as illuminating each other. However, for the record, a few have argued against mutuality. Contrary to Heidegger's phenomenal existence, it is claimed, phenomenal existence in Buddhism is illusory. Moreover, it is said by a few that Lao Tzu speaks in opposition to Heidegger's "language the house of being;" being only exists because of its opposite, non-being. 2. Taoist "dwelling" is described in a fifth-century Chinese landscape poem by Hsieh Ling-yun (Huang, Citation1967; see also Haar and Lilly, Citation1993). 3. First used in 1961 and on several occasions until his last sermon, given at the National Cathedral, on May 31, 1968, four days before his death. 4. Having community life judged by universal norms follows the intellectual strategy of Habermas (1984). For an ethics of discourse to operate effectively in the public sphere, he presumed an ideal speech situation as its context. Presuming an inherent desire in speech acts for mutual understanding, Habermas argues for an ideal speech formulation of full participation, mutuality and reciprocity as a goal for citizens and a critical standard by which to judge consensus. Universals are the bridging principle which makes agreement possible (Habermas, 1990, pp. 57–68).
