Title: COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF X RADIATION AT 197 kv AND BREMSSTRAHLUNG FROM A 3- Mev LINEAR ACCELERATOR
Abstract: The indices of organism function in rats irradiated with 300 r and 600 r of x radiation and with bremsstrahlung from linear accelerator were correlated and the results tabulated. The condition of rats exposed to 300 r from either source showed no initial visible differences. However, after 10 to 12 days, female rats irradiated with accelerator bremsstrahlung exhibited burns on the back and middle of the body, and after 30 days 4 out of 15 rats perished. None of the x-irradiated rats died. Effects of exposure to 300 r from a linear accelerator supplied with 1and 2-mm tantalum films were identical to the effects of x radiation. Exposure to 600 r from a linear accelerator resulted in burns and subsequent death of 6 out of 14 animals, while no burns were visible in animals exposed to x radiation and only 3 out of 12 died. However, animals exposed to x rays died 12 to 14 days following the exposure, while anr-mals exposed to accelerator irradiation died after 24 to 29 days. (R.V.J.)
